The Idara Way

Brewing the Perfect
Filter Coffee

A time-honoured ritual, made simple. Follow these steps to unlock the rich, aromatic decoction of a true South Indian filter coffee — right in your own kitchen.

20 g Coffee Powder
150 ml Hot Water
94–96°C Water Temp
5–8 min Brew Time

Step-by-Step Guide

Eight simple steps to a cup you'll never forget.

  1. 01

    Measure Your Coffee

Weigh out 20 g of Idara coffee powder. Precise measurement is the first secret to a consistently great cup.

  2. 02

    Heat the Water

Bring 150 ml of water to 94–96°C. Just off the boil — hot enough to extract the full flavour without burning the grounds.

  3. 03

    Load the Filter

Add the coffee powder into the upper chamber of your traditional South Indian filter. Gently press the perforated disc on top.

  4. 04

    Pour the Water

Pour the hot water gently and evenly over the coffee powder, then place the lid on the filter to retain heat and aroma.

  5. 05

    Let It Brew

Allow the decoction to drip slowly for 5–8 minutes. Patience is key — the decoction collects in the lower chamber, rich and concentrated.

  6. 06

    Add Sugar Optional

Add sugar directly into your cup before pouring. This lets it dissolve beautifully in the hot decoction.

  7. 07

    Pour the Decoction

Pour the brewed decoction into your cup. Notice its deep mahogany colour and intoxicating aroma — this is the soul of South Indian coffee.

  8. 08

Add Milk or Water & Enjoy

Top up with hot milk for a classic South Indian filter kaapi, or hot water for a bold, black decoction. Stir and savour every sip.

Pro Tips from Idara

Freshness Matters

Use coffee powder within 3–4 weeks of roasting for the most vibrant flavour profile.

Don't Over-Press

Press the disc lightly — too much pressure slows the drip excessively. Aim for a steady, slow drip.

Warm Your Cup

Rinse your tumbler with hot water before brewing to keep your coffee warm longer.

Experiment with Ratios

Prefer a stronger cup? Try 25 g of powder to 150 ml of water. Adjust to taste over time.
